COACHELLA - "They took my baby away," cries Virginia Ramirez. She can't believe her son isn't by her side. Ramirez says Mother's Day won't be the same this weekend without her son.
34-year-old Daniel Carmona was shot outside his house in Coachella while his wife and children were sleeping inside. The shooting happened Sunday on the 83000 block of Serpentine Way.
"It can't go on out there in the world like this," says Ramirez, "It's not justice." Ramirez says her son was a quiet guy at times, but he always had a sense of humor.
"He would always be like a comedian, like a little laugh and a little giggle at the time. He was always happy with his friends," shares Ramirez of her son.
Carmona just got married last month. He and his long-time girlfriend, Elizabeth, had four children. His mom says he was a family man and a good friend.
"He didn't have a bad record," adds Ramirez, "He never got into trouble." She says she's starting the healing process with the support of family and close friends. All she wants is for people to remember her son as a "funny" guy who would go out of his way to help people.
A funeral service for Carmona will be held next Monday at the Living Word and Desert Church in Indio. Ramirez says it's open to the public. Meanwhile, authorities with the Central Homicide Unit say they are actively investigating the shooting.
