PALM SPRINGS - More than 50 cities across the country will participate in "Dining out for Life", including Palm Springs.
The event will help raise money for HIV and AIDS. In all, the one day dining fundraiser raises more than $4 million for local AIDS service programs across the nation. Here in the Coachella Valley, the need for extra dollars to help low income HIV and AIDS patients gets greater every month. Desert Aids Project says they care for more than 2,200 people living with HIV and AIDS. "We grow on average of 30 patients every month and right now we're testing in 25 locations in this region alone,” says CEO of Desert Aids Project David Brinkman.
They say community events like “Dining out for Life” help immensely. “For our patient population, their medication costs about $2,000 a month, yet they are living on average of $850 a month,” says Brinkman.
35 restaurants from Palm Springs to Palm Desert participate in “Dining out for Life”. You can go to any participating restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner and however much you spend, a portion will go to the Desert Aids Project. "We are generously supported by restaurants like TRIO which has been the top producing restaurant for three years,” says Brinkman.
"Three years in a row that we are the highest contributor. 60% of our proceeds will go the DAP,” says General Manager of TRIO Justin Finley-Burk. All the proceeds, which last year were well over $100,000 for this area alone, do more than help patients with their medication. "Specifically, it allows us to bring new patients into care every day of the week. It allows us to advocate for people who can't speak for themselves on all sorts of political levels,” says Brinkman.
TRIO says they're pretty booked in the main dining room but they've introduced something new this year to raise even more money. "This is the first year we're going to have our patio open so we do have extra patio seating. Its all first come first serve basis,” says Finley-Burk.
The fundraiser starts tomorrow April 25, 2013. Below is a link to all the restaurants here in the desert participating in “Dining out for Life”.
