RANCHO MIRAGE - This is the second year that the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center hosted the Child Abuse Professionals Appreciation Luncheon. Babe's Barbeque and Brewhouse in Rancho Mirage sponsored the luncheon.
Barbara Sinatra, founder of the center, welcomed today's honorees. They included dozens of professionals from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, Child Protective Services (CPS), Riverside County District Attorney's Office and forensic medical personnel.
Riverside County's Assistant District Attorney, Seth Lafferty, shared with us the importance of communication in order prevent child abuse.
"Families need to make sure that they start really early on with their chidren and letting them know the things that they need to understand about sexual abuse," said Lafferty.
The director of the Sinatra center also spoke with us about ways to help battle child abuse.
"We are doing what we can. Not only to bring those children that have been abused to the children's center for an interview and to hopefully prosecute the perpetrator, but also to provide counseling for those children," said John Thoresen, "Because that's the only way we're going to break the generational cycle of abuse."
The Barbara Sinatra Children's Center has helped more than 18,000 abused children in the Coachella Valley. Their services are provided to any family regardless of a family's ability to pay.
