PALM DESERT - A new dmv opened its doors in Palm Desert today, but the opening was overshadowed by computer problems.
DMV computers were down for about an hour, forcing workers to tell customers to go home and make an appointment for the following day online. Customers can also drop off forms at the express deposit box.
"We come in and we get started and the system goes down, that's like a crush...you have all that energy and you are ready to go and all I can do is visit with my customers and give them alternatives," said Bettina Carbajal, DMV manager.
But even with the hiccup, workers are optimistic the new facility will draw in several thousand customers. It's expected relieve long lines at nearby Indio and Palm Springs DMVs and serve 70,000 customers annually.
"Before you know it we will be having more customers. I'm not saying a line, but more customers," said Carbajal.
