AmeriCorps Promote Reading Program Needs Your Help

CREATED Aug. 30, 2012

THERMAL - Funds are needed to continue critical reading intervention program for children in the Eastern Coachella Valley.

For the last six years, over 4,500 low-performing K-3 children of Coachella Valley Unified School District have been receiving critically needed reading tutoring through AmeriCorps Promote.

"The impact this reading intervention program has had on these children has been enormous. Over 40% of them have moved up at least one level in reading fluency after being tutored for a year by an AmeriCorps member.  This gives them a greater chance of succeeding in the rest of their education, since reading is the basis for learning.  And almost all of them improved their attitude towards reading and gained confidence in themselves after receiving individual tutoring" according to AmeriCorps.

Although the program is funded in large part through an AmeriCorps grant, additional support by the schools, foundation grants, local businesses and individual donations are required for the mandatory matching funds.

"With the deep budget cuts that the schools have experienced, they can now pay only a portion of the needed matching funds. In order for AmeriCorps Promote to continue, we need to have commitments for an additional $50,000 before we can begin a new year" said officials with AmeriCorp.
