Pension Reform Among Key Issues Still Facing Lawmakers

CREATED Aug. 26, 2012

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers head into the final week of their session with some of the most pressing legislative matters still to be resolved, or even publicly revealed.

Democratic leaders are pledging to pass comprehensive changes to the state's overburdened public pension systems before they adjourn Friday. But Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg said lawmakers are still working out the details with Gov. Jerry Brown.

Similarly opaque is a proposal to overhaul the state's $16 billion system for providing medical care and compensation to injured workers.

Lawmakers face a midnight Friday deadline to act on some 400 bills. They include one to create the nation's first state-run retirement program for private-sector workers and a two-bill package to lower college costs by closing a corporate tax loophole.
