Fire Rips Through Indio Strip Mall
INDIO - At least a half dozen businesses are destroyed following a strip mall fire early Friday in Indio.
The blaze gutted the Kristen Plaza, a strip mall located off Highway 111 just west of Monroe Street. Firefighters responded to the fire shortly before 5 a.m. There were no reports of injuries.
Fire investigators say it looks like the fire began at Frankie's Fresh Fish then spread to other area of the strip mall.
Among the damaged businesses is a popular Chinese restaurant, a taco shop and a check-cashing business.
More than 60 firefighters responded. The fire was under control and contained by 6:30 a.m., although traffic in the area was diverted until around 10 a.m.
Damage is estimated at $2 million, fire officials said. A value of about $6 million dollars was saved because of firefighters' efforts.
