Health Official Says California Leading Health Law

CREATED Jul. 11, 2012 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The head of California's health insurance exchange says more than 3 million uninsured residents will be able to buy affordable coverage starting next January as the state moves aggressively to implement the federal health care law. Peter Lee, executive director of the California Health Benefit Exchange, is trying to dispel what he says are myths about the health reform overhaul, referred to by opponents as 'Obamacare.' He says people will get a federal subsidy to pay for private health insurance. The state was the first in the nation to set up an exchange, which some states are now refusing to do. Lee fielded questions Wednesday on how California is enacting President Obama's signature program, after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld its constitutionality. More than 7 million Californians are currently uninsured.
