Palm Springs Woman To Stand Trial for Attacking Husband's Groin With Scissors

CREATED Jul. 6, 2012

PALM SPRINGS - A Palm Springs woman accused of trying to cut off her husband's penis will stand trial in August on felony charges.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Thomas N. Douglass ruled Friday that there was enough evidence for 70-year-old Virginia Valdez to proceed to trial on one count each of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and assault with a deadly weapon.

Valdez is currently barred from having any contact with her husband, according to court records.

She was arrested back in December 2011 after Palm Springs police went to the couple's residence in the 1700 block of Rochelle Road in response to a call from Valdez's 62-year-old husband.

Investigators say Valdez and her husband were having oral sex when she said she had to brush her teeth, then returned with a pair of heavy-duty scissors and attacked her husband's groin, attemtping to cut his penis.

The husband, identified as ``John Doe'' in the criminal complaint, ``got up in a panic and screamed in pain.'' Police say he drove himself to the hospital where he reported the incident to authorities. Investigators say he required advanced medical care and at least four stitches.

Valdez faces up to nine years in prison if convicted.
