Local Chefs Find Inspiration at Coachella Valley Farms
Local chefs got a rare look behind Coachella Valley's agriculture business. A tour bus took area chefs and tourists visit farmland in Eastern Coachella Valley.
"After tourism agriculture is our number one industry here and yet most people have never been out in the fields and learn how we do things here," said Nancy Cohee, Treasurer for Les Dames d'Escoffier of the Palm Springs Chapter.
The tickets purchased are helping fund scholarships for students to attend culinary school and the trip is inspiring chefs to use produce grown locally.
"I've got egg plant on the mind here and it's definitely going to be used in the restaurant," said Michael Vaughn, Executive Sous Chef of La Quinta Resort and Club.
In Coachella Valley's backyard, a half a billion dollar agriculture business. Farmworkers harvesting everything from eggplants to artichokes.
"Agriculture is so vital to the success of our nation, I think we got to step outside the box and realize what's out here in our backyard," said Adrian Zendejas, GM for Desert Mist Farms.
