CATHEDRAL CITY - One lucky Coachella Valley middle school student is a step closer to a $15,000 college scholarship. Organizers of the Turnaround Student of the Year Scholarship Fund announced the lucky winner Saturday night at a Black Tie Gala at the Doral Desert Princess Resort in Cathedral City.
The event helps raise money for the scholarship given to a student at Nellie Coffman Middle School. Organizers say the goal is to help motivate students who are lacking inspiration at school and whose educational potential was overcome by a lack of direction.
The event included dinner, dancing, silent auction and appearances by local notables such as boxing star Timothy Bradley and radio host Bill Feingold, who both shared personal stories of inspiration with the crowd. Bradley donated a pair of his boxing gloves to the auction, organizers say.
