Man Hospitalized after Snakebite
MECCA - Friday morning a man was bitten and hospitalized by a snake.
At 11:30 a.m. a 51 year old man was in the area of Avenue 66 and Grant Street when he was suddenly struck by a snake. Riverside County Firefighters rushed to the scene and assisted him before he was lifted by helicopter to a local hospital.
The man's condition was last listed as "moderate", and it is not yet known what type of of snake actually bit the man.
Be aware of your surroundings when you are in tall brush or hiking along one of the many Coachella Valley trails. Snakes are cold blooded and now that the weather is heating up here in the valley they will be out in numbers, basking on hot rocks or in the sun.
Rattlesnakes and sidewinders are known to this area and if you are bite by one, you will need to seek medical attention immediately as their bites are fatal. Other snakes are in the area, which can bite, but are otherwise harmless.
Remember these snakes can strike from a distance, so keep your distance!
