Bicyclist Dies on Mountain Trail, Injured Hiker Rescued

CREATED Apr. 21, 2012

PALM SPRINGS -  Emergency rescuers responded to two distress calls Saturday. The first call cam in at approximately 11:37 A.M., as a 911 cellular call of an injured hiker in the water fall area of Murray Canyon, located within the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Tribal Reservation, according to Palm Springs Police.

The injured hiker reportedly suffered from a severely broken leg and could not hike back to a vehicle. Members of the Palm Springs Mounted Search and Rescue Team responded to the remote location on foot. The team members contacted the injured hiker in Murray Canyon. They assessed the injured hiker and requested a helicopter to airlift the subject out.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter responded and arrived at the location at approximately 1:37 PM. The helicopter began deploying to the location at 1:46 P.M. with a Palm Springs Fire Department paramedic aboard.

The Palm Springs Police and Fire Departments subsequently received a 911 call from a mountain biker in the hills south of Araby Cove. The caller reported that a fellow mountain bicyclist was dehydrated and unconscious.

Emergency medical personnel began responding to the remote location. The CHP helicopter carrying the paramedic diverted from rescuing the injured hiker and flew to the injured bicyclist. The paramedic was flown to the injured bicyclist and dropped off. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is not known at this time but Palm Springs Police do not believe the cause of death is crime related at this time.

The CHP helicopter returned to responding to the injured hiker in Murray Canyon. The hiker was airlifted from the area in stable condition with an injured leg.

The helicopter returned to the area of the deceased mountain bicyclist. Palm Springs Mounted Search and Rescue Team members were dropped off at the location and will remain with the decedent until Riverside County Sheriff/Coroner personnel can be flown into the area. The non-injured bicyclist and PSFD paramedic have been airlifted from the location.
