Wikipedia Will Blackout Wednesday

CREATED Jan. 16, 2012

Sections of the internet will go dark on Wednesday in response to anti-piracy legislation.
Information online giant,Wikipedia, made a big announcement Monday.
If you get on the Wikipedia site, you will see a countdown.
They are counting down the hours until the site goes into blackout on Wednesday.
If you are looking for information on the internet, chances are a Wikipedia article will pop up.
We asked John and Mary Douglas of Palm Springs if they use Wikipedia. "I do, yes, we both do."
How long have people been using Wikipedia?
"I've been using wikipedia ever since I've been using computers basically, school assignments, it really is like an endless database of knowledge," said Sam Hummel of Cathedral City.
How often are people using Wikipedia?
"Almost every day whenever I have a question or anything I have to research or anything, it's like a walking dictionary you know," said Palm Desert resident, Irish.
But that walking dictionary will go offline on Wednesday.
Wikipedia will blackout for 24 hours in protest of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act.
"A lot of my friends and as well as myself, don't support it as a whole, we don't think it would be good for America we don't think it supports American values, in a lot of ways," said Hummel.
SOPA Was introduced in Congress to fight copyright violations and cyber crime.
But some companies, like Wikipedia, say it damages the free and open internet.
"But I think the message is important, I do too, so even  if it isn't going to create a great deal of inconvenience with us, I'm glad they're doing it because I think it sends an important message," said Douglas.
And that message has been heard, President Obama has said he would not support SOPA.
The White House said efforts to fight online piracy must also guard against online censorship of lawful activity.
