Free Rides for the Visually Impaired in the East Valley

CREATED Jan. 4, 2012

RANCHO MIRAGE - To better serve blind and visually impaired residents of the eastern Coachella Valley, Braille Institute has started providing free transportation from the eastern Coachella Valley to its campus in Rancho Mirage.

The new service is offered on Mondays from the Mecca Family & Farmworkers Service Center located at 91-275 66th Avenue in Mecca. Pick up is at 8:45am with return at approximately 2:45pm.

The new transportation service targets the under-served communities of the East Coachella Valley where the prevalence of Diabetes translates into an increase in Diabetic Retinopathy, a condition that results in vision loss.

At Braille Institute adults with vision loss benefit from a wide variety of teaching and skill-building programs that are available free of charge.

According to Braille Institute Regional Director, Lisa Jimenez, "Braille Institute is a special place for low vision wellness for the Spanish-speaking population in the Coachella Valley." She added, "We provide a wide variety of life skills and personal enrichment classes and library services in Spanish for those with low vision. We hope the community will take advantage of these free services."
