PALM SPRINGS - On Monday, December 19th, 2011, at approximately 6:54 PM, the Palm Springs Police Department responded to a major injury traffic accident involving a Hyundai Elantra and a Ford Expedition, at the intersection of Racquet Club Drive and North Palm Canyon Drive ( SR 111).
Officers arrived on scene and learned that the driver and lone occupant of a Hyundai Elantra sustained major injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was transported to a nearby hospital and died a short time later as a result of the injuries. A passenger in the Ford Expedition was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Racquet Club Drive through the intersection of North Palm Canyon Drive and collided with the Ford, which was traveling southbound on North Palm Canyon through the intersection. The cause of this accident is under investigation and it is too soon to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
This intersection is controlled by signals and PSPD is investigating if one of the vehicles proceeded through a red signal. PSPD Traffic Investigators will be on scene for the next few hours collecting evidence and processing the accident scene. The intersection will be closed during this process for the next few hours and the area should be avoided by anybody who needs to proceed through the area.
There are several convenient alternate routes in the area including North Indian Canyon Drive for northbound/southbound traffic and either Vista Chino or San Rafael Drive for eastbound/westbound traffic.
The name of the decedent will not be released by PSPD until it is released by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner Office. Anyone who witnessed this traffic collision or has information regarding the traffic collision is urged to contact the Palm Springs Police Department at 760-323-8116.
