Standoff in Coachella after Shooting

CREATED Oct. 20, 2011

COACHELLA - A standoff between police and a suspect started Thursday morning after police say a man shot at a neighbors home, then barricaded himself in a house.

According to police the suspect shot at a home and two vehicles then threw molotav cocktails.

Neighbors say the man had been causing problems for a while. "He's been going on one for the past few months like I say, he just came up to this right here you know, he did something to one of my family members and to their home and to their family," said a woman who wanted to remain anonymous.

Other neighbors told us the man had been seen shooting in the air before Thursday's standoff. "I feel bad because we live here around and we have grandkids and this kind of people are danger," said nearby neighbor, Marco Velarde.

Shortly before 6 p.m. officers told KMIR6 the man did come out of his house. He was uncooperative, so they tried to taze him, but it was unsuccessful and he ran back inside.

Deputy Angel Ramos said, "We don't know if he's going to be more aggressive now that the taser was deployed, situations like this we have to take every precautionary measure we can to keep ourselves safe and keep the community safe."

With that, dozens more officers arrived, prepared to go into a SWAT situation and armored vehicles drove into the scene.

The blocked off streets and police in body armor shocked neighbors just returning home. "I don't know, the first thing I thought of was where's my mom, so I don't she left me a crazy voicemail the cops were outside and telling her to leave," said Hernando Rodriguez, who lives on the street.

Around 7 p.m., we heard what sounded like more gunfire, but police would not confirm. As of 11 p.m. Thursday, police still say the man is barricaded inside the home.
