Watch: California Highway Patrol officers herd goats off the road

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED May 5, 2014

A herd of goats that may have been as many as 50 strong wandered onto Highway 24 in Oakland, Calif., over the weekend, snarling traffic for about 30 minutes until California Highway Patrol officers could move them out of the way.

“Witnesses reported the goats were wandering the lanes, causing motorists to brake for the hazard,” reports the San Francisco Chronicle. “Amy Stabler, a motorist stuck while she waited for the critters to move off the freeway, said she stopped in traffic when she realized that as many as 50 goats were straying into the lanes.

"They just kept coming over the ridge," she said. "Cars just couldn't get past because as soon as one moved on, two or more came over."

Stabler also told the paper she did not see a person with the goats, which appeared to be wandering freely on their own.
