Utah mother arrested after dumping newborn in trash can

A Utah woman was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder after dumping her newborn baby into a neighbor’s trash can.

The mother, Alicia Marie Englert, 23, said she was afraid to tell her parents about the pregnancy and hoped the baby’s death would solve her problems.

A passerby discovered the newborn after she heard a noise from the trash container and thought it was a kitten meowing. Englert said the day-old baby girl had been in the trash can for about an hour before she was found.

According to CBS News, Englert told police that the baby had not received any type of medical attention or food. Authorities say the infant was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital where she is on a ventilator and “fighting for her life.”

Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said there is currently no information available on the identity of the child’s father.
