Pope Francis teaches a 'hopeful spirit' on Easter Sunday

Pope Francis addressed a holiday crowd exceeding 150,000 believers in St. Peter's Square on Sunday with an Easter "Urbi et Orbi," a blessing to the city of Rome and to the world. This is Pope Francis' second Easter season of his pontificate.

"Pope Francis said the hopeful spirit of Easter means 'leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast,'" reports Time.

The Pontiff said, “We ask [God] to enlighten and inspire the initiatives that promote peace in Ukraine, so that all those involved, with the support of the international community, will make every effort to prevent violence,” further reports Time. The Catholic church is celebrating Easter this year at the same time as Orthodox churches. Ukraine has a large presence in Orthodox faith.

Pope Francis also denounced Nigerian terrorist attacks and called for united peace for Syria and Africa.
