Parents of a 13-year-old girl in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, turned their child in to the local sheriff’s office after finding nude photos of their daughter and other children on her cell phone and tablet. The parents say they were trying to protect their child from predators.
The mother found lewd texts exchanged between her daughter and some much older teen boys, one of whom allegedly asked the 13-year-old for sex. The girl, who is about to enter the eighth grade, was both sending and receiving the naked pictures.
“What scares me is, this is much bigger than we realize. How many others are doing this and you don’t realize it,” the girl’s mother told local station WTVR CBS 6
, which is not revealing her name to protect the family’s identity.
“Looking through the phone and the tablet we did find sexual pictures, conversations that were very inappropriate for her age,” the mother said. None of the photos showed her daughter with anyone else.
But the mother says, “Everybody wanted to be her friend, because according to these people, she was cool now.”
The daughter may face criminal charges for distributing the photos, but her parents took that risk believing it is more important to shield her from the older men.
“We did this now to protect her for now and in the future, because this could get worse. She could be taken,” the mother said. “What she’s facing may be harsh, but we feel it’s for her own protection.”
The older teen boys could face felony charges depending on their ages, according to WTVR.
