A 12-year-old from Michigan is being tried as an adult after stabbing a 9-year-old boy to death on a Kentwood playground this week.
The victim, Michael Conner] Verkerke, "was playing with three other children Monday 'when one of the children, for an unknown reason, pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed one of the other children,' a Kentwood Police Department statement said," reports CNN.
Jamarion Lawhorn, the attacker, and Verkerke had never met before Monday's stabbing.
Verkerke managed to run back home after being stabbed, but collapsed on his porch upon arrival. He was rushed in an ambulance to a local hospital, where he died the same night.
"Lawhorn, meanwhile, 'left the playground then went to a nearby residence where he asked to use the phone,' Kentwood Chief of Police Thomas Hillen said," CNN further reports. Glen Stacy, the homeowner, recalled that, "he told the 911 dispatcher, 'Hi, I just stabbed someone, please pick me up and come kill me, I want to end my life.'"
Lawhorn, who will be tried as an adult, is being held in the Kent County Detention Center. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 13. However, whether he will face first or second degree murder charges is unclear at this time. A competency hearing will be held first.
As of this posting, 276 people have contributed to raising $11,692 in a GoFundMe campaign for Verkerke's funeral.
