Just a couple of days before the start of the regular NFL season, Denver Bronco's wide receiver Wes Welker has been suspended.

According to USA Today, Welker was suspended four games for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. The announcement was made Tuesday.

Welker told The Denver Post that he was "shocked." He also said that he would "NEVER" knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage.

The news of the suspension was broken by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Twitter.

Albert Breer, a reporter with the NFL Network, says the test came back positive in May.

ProFootballTalk reported that Welker took Molly while at the Kentucky Derby horse race. Welker denies it, saying he doesn't do any drugs. The football player says that he thinks someone may have put something in his drink. He appealed the penalty two weeks ago, but it was rejected by the league.

Welker's suspension is supposed to begin Wednesday. He will return on Oct. 6, according to ESPN.

He is not the only Denver Bronco's player that is currently suspended. Kicker Matt Prater was also suspended for an alcohol-related violation. In addition, linebacker Danny Trevathan will also miss at least the first three games because of a broken leg.
