Rice remains! Basketball coach to stay at Boise State

By Paul Gerke. CREATED Mar 29, 2014

According to the 2012 census, the state of Washington is home to 6.897 million residents. After a week of flirting with a move back to Pullman, Boise State men's basketball coach Leon Rice has decided not to add to that population total.

Boise State confirmed Saturday afternoon that Leon Rice will not accept the head coaching position at his alma mater, Washington State, days after Leon interviewed for the Cougars vacancy.

Instead, Rice and Boise State agreed upon amendments to his current contract. Leon will receive a $100,000 raise next year, and a 3% increase in his salary in each of the remaining four years of the deal. A revision was also made to Rice's roll-over clause. One year will automatically be added to his contract each season in which the Broncos win 18 or more games or make the NCAA Tournament.

"I am really excited for the future of Bronco basketball," said Rice in a statement released by the university. "There has been a great commitment to grow this program. There's a commitment from our administration, our student-athletes, and our fans. That's what has me looking forward to continuing to build what we have here at Boise State."

"We feel the best years of this program are ahead of us and we are very excited Leon will be leading our men's team," added Athletic Director Mark Coyle.

Both Rice and Coyle are out of town, and are unavailable for further comment.
