NCAA bans Vandals from postseason

By Paul Gerke. CREATED Apr 26, 2014

The University of Idaho football team has won just two games in its last two seasons. It would've been a pretty safe bet the Vandals wouldn't be playing in a bowl this year.

Now you can be 100% sure.

The NCAA has dropped the hammer on the University of Idaho, banning the Vandals from postseason bowls in 2014 and stripping the squad of four hours of practice time per week.

The penalties are a result of a failure to meet academic progress rate (APR) standards in each of the last four seasons. The university was notified of the impending sanctions last November. The school appealed twice, but to no avail.

The Vandals should be spared from future punishment, according to Athletic Director Rob Spear.

"While we accept these penalties, it is important to note that aggressive, corrective action has already been taken by our program," explained Spear. "We've positioned our football program to significantly exceed their APR for the (2014) football season. Much of the success is directly related to the discipline and quality that coach Petrino has brought to the football program."

Idaho's seniors, provided they haven't lost APR points over their career, would be free to transfer without sitting out a season. Coach Petrino met with his seniors Saturday morning, and does not expect any to leave the program.
