In last year’s address of the conference, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said he was happy to add Utah State and San Jose State, and play 2013 with ten member schools. Of course, the Mountain West ended up retaining Boise State and San Diego State, so the conference is 12-deep this year- a number that Thompson seems equally content with.
"Consistency, rivalry, geography, history, familiarity. I think we’re really comfortable with these 12 institutions," said Thompson at the Mountain West Media Days Tuesday.
"Let’s say there’s an institution out there that wants to join us, and there are. Then you go to 13. I don’t know how you divide 13 into seven and six divisions, so then you’ve got to go to 14."
"It gets right back to the base question of 'Who?'"
Coming up with two teams to add may be difficult, but a thirteenth is easy. BYU seems like a perfect fit, assuming the Cougars could renegotiate their current TV contract.
"If they were to have an interest in the Mountain West Conference, we would talk to them. There’s no question," said Thompson. "We have a working relationship with them. They were a very good member of the Mountain West Conference, and would make us a better league."
