Boise State won its 49th consecutive October football game Saturday over Utah State. The offense racked up 447 yards on the best defense in the Mountain West, and the Broncos' defense made four sacks and caught two interceptions.
Why did the team play so well?
To steal a line from *NSYNC: Bye, bye bye.
Under Chris Petersen, the Broncos have been unbeatable in the game immediately following a bye week. Since he became the head coach in 2006, Petersen is 10-0in those contests.
Not counting season openers or bowls, the Broncos are 17-0 with ten or more days between games in the Petersen era.
"I would actually probably like coaching football if we had a bye every other week," said Petersen wryly. "A five game season, stretched over 11 or 12 weeks. You can get prepared, put in exactly what you want, and get a few of your guys back healthy."
Boise State's next opponent, Nevada, will be fresh from a bye when the Wolfpack visit Bronco Stadium on Saturday.
