Hedrick, Ajayi lead Broncos to win after Southwick breaks ankle

Despite losing starting quarterback Joe Southwick on its first offensive play, Boise State defeated rival Nevada 34-17 Saturday night.
Southwick scrambled on the Broncos' first snap, and was tackled awkwardly along the BSU sideline. Head coach Chris Petersen confirmed postgame that Southwick suffered a broken ankle. There is no time table for his return.
Junior back-up QB Grant Hedrick was thrust into starting duty and performed admirably. Boise State trailed 17-7 at halftime, but scored 27 unanswered points thanks largely to the rushing efforts of Hedrick and starting runningback Jay Ajayi. Hedrick finished 18-21 for 150 yards passing, adding 115 rushing yardsand two touchdowns on eight carries. Ajayi carried the ball 24 times, rumbling for 222 yards and three scores.
Boise State defensive end Demarcus Lawrence led the Bronco defense with 3.5 sacks.
