Gregory named interim coach, Wilcox next for Broncos?

By Paul Gerke. CREATED Dec 6, 2013

As recently as this season, Chris Petersen claimed to take his coaching career one year at a time. He insisted he wouldn't be the next Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden, and won't be coaching into his 60's.

It wasn't unrealistic to imagine Petersen retiring a Bronco.

But after 13 years in blue, he decided it was time to don a different color. Like purple.

Chris Petersen has agreed to a 5-year, $18 million contract with the University of Washington. Petersen met with Huskies Athletic Director Scott Woodward for 90 minutes Thursday night, and gave a verbal commitment to become the next Washington head coach. The news became official after Petersen met with his team Friday morning.

Boise State announced linebackers coach and associate head coach Bob Gregory will serve as interim for the school's upcoming bowl game. Petersen did not speak with the media Friday, but select players will be made available on Monday.

So who will take over the reigns of the Bronco program? Athletic Director Mark Coyle said he has already begun a nationwide search for the next Boise State head coach. Several names stand out, in former Boise state defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. He would be an odds-on favorite if current defensive coordinator, Pete Kwiatkowski goes with Petersen, as some outlets reported Friday night.

Arkansas State head coach Bryan Harsin and former Boise State coach Dirk Koetter are two more hot names. Koetter is rumored to be interviewing at the University Monday.
