The Boise Hawks won their playoff opener Tuesday night, shutting out the regular season South Division champion Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 3-0.
Boise outhit its opponent 11-3, thanks in large part to a dominating performance from starting pitcher Paul Blackburn. Blackburn pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight Salem-Keizer batters. Both of Blackburn's hits were allowed in the second inning.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to an RBI double by Danny Lockhart and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yasiel Balaguert. Balaguert added an RBI single in the seventh inning and finished the game 3-3 at the plate.
Reliever Zach Godley pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three Volcano hitters.
Game two of the best-of-three series is Wednesday night in Salem.
