Boise State starting runningback Aaron Baltazar and back-up safety Ebo Makinde will both miss the rest of the 2013 season. Baltazar, a true freshman, tore an ACL in Boise State's win over Southern Mississippi. Makinde, a fifth-year senior, tore a pectoral muscle.
According to head coach Chris Petersen, the Broncos have now lost nine players to season-ending injuries.
"You don't like to lose any of those guys without question. I mean, I think about Ebo Makinde... He's done. He doesn't get any more football," said Petersen. "You know you're going to lose a guy here and there but when you lose them for a long time, it's a bummer."
Petersen openly admits he anticipates several freshmen having to step up each season.
There's no way he saw this coming.
26 of his players have logged their first FBS minutes this year, accounting for nearly 40% of the team's roster. Two new injuries may force even more underclassmen into action.
Petersen said Jack Fields and Derrick Thomas will receive more carries in Baltazar's absence. BSU visits Utah State on Saturday.
