Last month, Fruitland two-sport stud, Joey Martarano announced his decision to play football at Boise State in lieu of a career in professional baseball. As a result, Martarano was not selected in the first two days of the MLB first-year player draft.
But on Saturday, the Philadelphia Phillies decided to take a chance on him. Joey came off the board with the 391st overall pick, midway through the 13th round.
There is still an outside chance that a deal could be worked out to allow Martarano to pursue playing baseball outside of the Broncos' football season, but Martarano confirmed earlier this week that his decision to play football was final.
Later Saturday, Rocky Mountain graduate Isaac Anderson was selected in the 34th round by the Kansas City Royals. The right handed hurler just finished his freshman campaign at the College of Southern Idaho, in which he posted a 0.82 era in his first year as a pitcher.
