Broncos Offense Wins Final Scrimmage

BOISE, Idaho – Rushing touchdowns from running back Malcolm Johnson and quarterback Grant Hedrick, and a 66-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Southwick to wide receiver Geraldo Boldewijn helped earn the Boise State offense a 26-20 victory over the defense Saturday at Bronco Stadium.
Johnson, a redshirt sophomore, led the Broncos with 10 carries and 41 yards, and scored on a nine-yard run.
Hedrick picked up 26 yards on seven carries, including a three-yard touchdown. He also completed 9-of-10 passes for 97 yards.
Redshirt senior quarterback Kellen Moore completed 7-of-12 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Each touchdown came during a red zone session and did not count in the scoring summary. Redshirt sophomore tight end Gabe Linehan caught a 30-yard touchdown from Moore, and redshirt junior wide receiver Mitch Burroughs caught a 12-yard scoring strike.
Southwick completed 4-of-10 passes for 101 yards, including the 66-yard touchdown to Boldewijn. Southwick also picked up 37 yards on three carries.
Freshman Troy Ware caught a team-high four receptions for 42 yards.
In addition to the three touchdowns, the Bronco offense put points on the board with two field goals – a 26-yarder from redshirt freshman Dan Goodale, and a 23-yarder from junior Michael Frisina.
The defense scored eight of its 20 points on sacks, receiving two points each. Redshirt sophomore defensive end Kharyee Marshall, freshman linebacker Blake Renaud and redshirt senior defensive end Jarrell Root each recorded one, and redshirt freshman defensive tackle David Cushing and sophomore defensive lineman Beau Martin combined for another.
The defense also picked up three points for field goal stops in the red zone (one point each), and nine points for fourth down stops (three points each).
Boise State is slated to open the 2011 season against Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Sept. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (MT) at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga., and the game will be televised by ESPN.
