idahoans, start your engines! Put the pedal to the metal and take a ride in the Fast Lane.
"We have indoor, racing go-karts, so they're not like a recreational type. It's actually a go-kart that you would find on a racing track in Europe," Said Bradley Gorringe, owner of Fast Lane Indoor Kart Racing.
But you don't have to go to Europe. Just head to Franklin and Cloverdale in Boise. Gorringe and his wife were already semi-retired until she bought him the whole indoor facility as a birthday present last year.
"I've always loved go-karts since I was a little kid," he said.
Now he has his own fleet.
Because these karts zip by at up to 43 miles an hour, they have added safety features like a roll bar, a bumper, and seat belts. While racing suits are optional, helmets are required.
"It's funny, though, to see how competitive people get here. Insane!" Gorringe said.
Those zealous racers don't have to cross the finish line first to win. Fast Lane times every lap you make for ten minutes, and gives you a final average lap time to compare with your friends.
"Another cool thing about the job is people get off the track with big smiles on their face. So it's like, 'Wow, that was so cool! That was so fun! Let's go again!'" Gorringe said.
Gorringe says his gas-powered karts are more exhilerating than electric ones. The building has four giant fans that constantly circulate clean air into the track in just six minutes. But that does mean you can expect the temperature to mimic the weather outside.
The squeal of the tires and the roar of the engines brings a thrill to drivers both young and old.
"We have a group of guys that comes in on Sunday. They call themselves like the Old Geezer Race Club or something, and I mean these guys are all probably 65 plus. So one week I was here and they were like, "Come and race!." I was like, "Alright, I'll race." But I was thinking in my mind, "Well, I'm not gonna try to win. I want them to feel good." But no! They whooped my butt!" Gorringe said, laughing.
Satisfy your need for speed during the 10th anniversary celebration going on during September. Club members get $10 races Sunday-Thursday all month long. Not a member? You can join Fast Lane for just $10 and still get the same deal.
