Going Places: Cruising the high seas

By Rachel Garceau. CREATED Mar 20, 2014

While spring will officially get underway this week, it's time to start planning those summer trips. Good Morning Idaho talked to Global Travel about the best deals for families right now, and they suggested people consider a cruise when planning their summer vacations.

Travel advisor Julie Summers told us there are several reasons why cruises are a great option for families.  First, there are several promotions right now offering free sailings for kids (often from the age of 17 down!), stateroom upgrades and a variety of other perks depending on the ship and sail date. Summers says to move quickly on these offers, though: they need to be booked by March 31st with travel by the end of the year.

GMI asked, what’s new and exciting in cruising? Says Summers, "The ships! Almost every line has a new ship out right and more on the way. There are staterooms designed specifically for the solo traveler; award winning chefs creating the meals and a myriad of ways to be entertained: Ice skating rinks, rock walls, golf, hot glass shows, Broadway musicals like Hairspray and Chicago,  bumper cars, sky-diving simulators, Cirq shows, surf simulators, bowling alleys, billiards, zip lines—so much fun to be had!"

So who is cruising these days? "Everyone! " says Summers. "There is some form of entertainment for every age group. The youth programs are educational and engaging with age appropriate activities. And let’s not forget the destinations—you wake up in a new port every couple days. It’s a wonderful way to see the world."

Summers also talked about something new for our corner of the world—the American Queen Steamboat Company will start Pacific Northwest river cruises from Portland, OR and Clarkston, WA. Current offers are 50% off for June 2014 sailings.
