A somewhat scary horror film, Tom Cruise, and a few little treasures highlight this week on DVD and Blu-ray.
Mama - Universal - Rated PG-13
Mama is decent enough as far as PG-13 horror films go. Jessica Chastain is the best part of the film. It starts out strong, managing to give some genuine scares before the ending which is a let down. Bonus feature include deleted scenes, commentary and more.
Jack Reacher - Paramount - Rated PG-13
Clumsy and somewhat unintentionally funny, Jack Reacher seems as if it's another ego booster for Tom Cruise who looks like he's advertising for a new wife. He seems to scream from every pore, "See how macho I am?" He is living up to his character's name, reaching for something he's not.
Extras include commentary and three featurettes.
Revenge For Jolly - Sony - Rated R
Revenge for Jolly is a delicious, over the top, black comedy that I enjoyed thoroughly. Most of the names in this film, Elijah Wood, Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig are just cameos, but all are good and all are fun. This is a terrific film! There are no bonus features.
Starlet - Music Box Films - Unrated
At the heart of Starlet is a wonderful, unconventional, heartfelt movie, framed in the world of porn stars and lonely old people. This film showcases a wonderful performance from Dree Hemmingway, daughter of Mariel, and great granddaughter of Ernest, along with a delightful, involving, unexpectedly good story. Unfortunately, there is one way too explicit scene that will keep most people away. Bonus features include a behind the scenes documentary and an audition tape.
Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights - Touchstone - Rated PG-13
Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson star in the mostly enjoyable Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights now on blu-ray for the first time together. Extras include deleted scenes, commentaries and multiple featurettes.
WWII From Space - Lionsgate - Not Rated
Interesting, unique and educational, WWII From Space gives a perspective on the war that has never been done before. I really enjoyed it. There are no bonus features.
