A popular workout supplement is being taken off the shelves after research shows it contains a chemical similar to meth.
It's a supplement called "Craze" that bodybuilders take before a workout. It advertises that it gives users the ability to train beyond their limits and gives endless energy.
It's also caused its users to fail drug tests.
Craze contains a chemical that is similar to methamphetamine. Its promise of high energy and narrowed focus stood out to one pharmacist as being similar to the effects of meth.
"[Craze works] just kind of how methamphetamine affects the brain, whether it be paranoia or hallucinations,” said Terry Smith, a pharmacist at Ladd Pharmacy in Boise. “There has been one case of a guy running - I guess he didn't know it - but he was running through the streets unclothed - and he was on Craze, he wasn't on meth."
Reporter Jake Melder visited the Idaho Athletic Club in Nampa to see if bodybuilders had heard of Craze. Despite the club taking the supplement off its own shelves, there were many who had tried it.
One of those was Jacob Huerta. He said he first tried the supplement when he got a sample of it at a nutrition store.
"It gave you that tingle that everyone is looking for,” Jacob said. “[Craze gave me] good pump, energy, focus - that's what caught my attention about it. That's why I liked it."
Many of the people On Your Side spoke to who had used Craze were completely unaware that it had meth-like chemicals in it.
One man who wouldn't go on record said even after knowing that he would continue to use it, and products like it, because it got results.
For Huerta, knowing what Craze contains has him more aware of the supplements he takes.
"Definitely you want to look,” he said. “You want to be more careful now and look at what is in [a supplement]."
Multiple nutrition stores have stopped selling Craze for a while. The only store still stocking it is GNC - though associates at the stores said they were soon getting rid of it, too.
