It is a product designed to keep your lips feeling great, but teens have found a new use for Burt’s Bees Lip Balm. They’re now using the product for “beezin”.
It’s a trend of people applying a layer of the lip balm on the eyelids. People who do it say it adds to the experience of being drunk or high. Others say it helps keep them alert.
On Your Side reporter Chris Oswalt asked Doctor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Jenny Huber, of Ada Vision, "isn’t this just stupid?"
Huber laughed and replying, “well I certainly wouldn't recommend it."
Huber said the peppermint oil in the lip balm provides the cooling sensation many people are feeling. She worries it could cause problems like inflammation, irritation, redness and swelling in the eyes.
"Even when just applied on the eyelids, peppermint oil releases fumes that can cause the same irritation in the eyes," she said.
Many teens think because Burt’s Bees is all natural, using it on the eyes could be safe. Huber said that is a big misconception and she hopes people stay away from the trend.
