SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego's chief lawyer says the city's stability depends on the resignation and replacement of Mayor Bob Filner, who's besieged by allegations of unwanted advances toward at least 17 women.
City Attorney Jan Goldsmith told a Friday breakfast forum that the city cannot have the issue continue on for another six months or a year.
Goldsmith told the gathering he could not discuss any specifics of a deal between the mayor and city negotiators that emerged after three days of settlement talks.
The City Council is set to consider the deal in closed session Friday afternoon.
A lawyer for a former Filner aide who has accused him of sexual harassment says any such deal would not settle her lawsuit against the mayor.
