UPDATE: Man looking at text caused crash into Ada County Sheriff Deputy patrol car

By On Your Side Newsroom. CREATED Aug 13, 2014 - UPDATED: Aug 14, 2014

An 18-year old Emmett man who claimed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before crashing into an Ada County Sheriff's Deputy has been cited with inattentive driving after officals discovered he was looking at his phone following a text.

Authorities say Holden Falk was driving eastbound on State Street in the city of Star at about 9 p.m. Wednesday when his Ford sport-utility vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic and crossed three lanes before it struck the Ada County Sheriff's Office vehicle. The Explorer continued down State Street before crashing into the sign of a business.

Sgt. Mike Fratusco sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at an area hospital.

Police say Falk wasn't wearing a seatbelt and sustained more serious injuries but is expected to be OK.

Police say Fratusco didn't have his emergency lights or siren on and attempted to avoid the crash.

Both vehicles were totaled.

Idaho State Police are investigating.
