Idaho Health Exchange call center takes 50 calls on opening day

By KIVI Staff. CREATED Sep 26, 2013

About 50 people called the Treasure Valley's Health Insurance Exchange call center on Wednesday, its first day of business.

Idahoans who need health insurance can begin shopping for it through the state-based exchange on October 1.

Call center employees say many people are confused about whether they need to enroll in the exchange program by next week.  October 1 is the beginning of open enrollment.  The open enrollment period will last for six months and close on March 31, 2014.  You have that time to go online or to call the health exchange to determine which plan will work best for you.

No one can be denied coverage because of a preexisting condition. Coverage begins as early as January 1, or in as little as 100 days from Setember 25.

Those who do not have insurance by March 31, 2014 will be penalized.  Every adult in a household will pay a $95 fine.  The penalty for each uninsured child is $47.50.  The fine increases annually.
