Feeding the Hungry

Today's grand opening was also the perfect time to give back to the community.
Walmart announced the recipient of its $75,000 Idaho giving fund.
The Idaho Food Bank is this year's winner, and food bank leaders say the donation couldn't have come at a better time. Jenifer Johnson from the Idaho Food Bank says this money will help fund programs like the backpack program, which gives school children much- needed nutrition when they are away from school. "Those are children who for whatever reason need weekend nutrition.
They might really rely on, their families might really be relying on the schools to provide their meals and lunches so it provides two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, and two dinners for children who just need a little extra food assistance on the weekends."
Cash donations like the one from Walmart are especially helpful. The food bank discovered through a recent survey that the backpack program is a big hit with the kids, but there were other little ones at home who were being left out.
"We learned that they were admittedly sharing with brothers or sisters, which makes sense. If they're hungry, they've got a brother or sister who's hungry as well." In order to make sure everyone in the family who's Hungry is getting a little extra help, the food bank developed the school pantry program.
It provides food boxes to families in need, so everyone can get a taste. Both programs are completely confidential. "If you can help the whole family, you are helping that child who is also receiving the backpack." This is the busy season for the food bank. It's always in need of more volunteers. And, if you are interested in sponsoring a child for the backpack program, you can do so for around $25 a month.
