Eldery woman survives fall into canal south of Barber Park
Emergency responders were called around 5:30 p.m. Sunday night by a citizen who reported a woman in the New York canal near Healey Road, just south of Barber Park.
As Boise Firefighters and police rushed to help, two citizens - one who lived nearby and one who was riding a bicycle in the area - ran and rode along the canal and were able to catch up to the woman and pull her to shore.
"She had a strong will to survive. It took all her strength to stay afloat in the cold, fast moving water. We are very thankful for the citizens’ assistance tonight and that she's alright," said Battalion Chief John Peugh with the Boise Fire Department.
After the rescue, the woman, in her early 70's was conscious and alert and able to tell officers and firefighters what happened. She says she was walking along the canal bank picking flowers when she accidentally fell in.
She was rescued near Federal Way, 1.8 miles east of where she fell in.
"She was very tired and cold, but very happy to be rescued. We're extremely thankful this turned out the way it did," said BC Peugh.
