CWI students finally receive financial aid refunds

Nearly a month into the school year, many CWI students are finally receiving their financial aid refunds.
26 year old psychology major Joshua Travis is taking seven courses in his second semester at CWI, and relies on his financial aid refund money to cover class costs and day to day expenses.
“They lost my paperwork the first time, and so I filled that out again and turned it in, and they lost it a second time, so I ended up having to go in a third time,” Travis said.
Several headaches and phone calls later, Travis found out he had a 30 day hold on his account. The hold is only supposed to impact first time students, and CWI officials couldn’t offer Travis an explanation.
“I called them first to see why mine hadn’t been disbursed like everyone else’s had,” Travis said. “There wasn’t any explanation it was a ‘Whoops, our bad.’”
Travis’s military background already leaves him stressed. He's on disability after a tour of duty in Iraq and that money only covers a small part of his expenses. Unable to go back to work, he relies on financial aid to help with day to day living.
“It’s been raising my anxiety levels especially the weeks where I’ve had to drive down here and handle things, because when you don’t really have money to put gas in your car it’s kind of frustrating when you have to drive to the school to get something done,” Travis said.
He’s relieved to finally see the money enter his bank account, but already in the fourth week of classes, Travis finds himself behind on assignments.
“Some assignments, like for my online English class, I haven’t been able to do because I don’t have the other book that I need for that class,” Travis said. “For my digital photography class that I’m taking I haven’t had a camera for the first four weeks, so I haven’t even been able to do four weeks of assignments because of it.”
CWI leaders say every student who turned in all the required paperwork by the priority deadline in July should now have their financial aid refunds.
