Big SUVs rumble along as GM shows new models

CREATED Sep. 12, 2013

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) -- The big SUV keeps rolling along.

When gas hit $4 per gallon five years ago, analysts predicted the three-ton vehicles would soon be extinct.

But on Thursday, General Motors is unveiling a redesigned lineup of truck-based SUVs. Turns out the giant vehicles are still popular with drivers hauling boats, campers and large families.

GM controls 70 percent of the big SUV market in the U.S.

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade will hit showrooms in late winter or early spring.

Big SUV sales have fallen 75 percent since peaking at 917,000 in 2001. Although sales are only about a quarter of the peak, they're rising again.

Sales are up 4.5 percent since hitting a low of 228,000 in 2009.
