ACHD eliminates school zone in west Boise neighborhood

By Lauren Johnson. CREATED Aug 25, 2014

A multi-lane intersection at Jullion and Ustick Road will no longer be a school zone, even after the death of a 13-year-old girl in April.

A ghost bike and pinwheels mark the spot where Olivia Schnacker died and where Melissa Christenson was a former crosswalk guard. She explained, “I love these kids. There’s no cross-guard, and there’s still kids crossing on their own.”

One reason that ACHD decided to cover the school crossing zone lights is that students are now being bused in that area.

Nicole Pineda who works for ACHD said, “The school district made the decision that they did not want elementary-aged children crossing a 5-lane road, so all of the children south of Ustick are being bussed. ... We also observed the cross walk for a period of time and noticed that the children that are using the crosswalk were not elementary aged."

Olivia’s mother explained she is well aware of ACHD removing the school zone lights, but explained it only takes one child to devastate a community and feels strongly about keeping the school zone in place.
