3 Idahoans to be honored during 32nd Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service

The 32nd Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will honor 73 firefighters who died in 2012 and eight firefighters who died in previous years.  Among them are three Idaho firefighters who died in the line of duty.

First Officer Ronnie Edwin Chambless, age 40, and Captain Todd N. Tompkins, age 48, of Neptune Aviation Services, Inc. died when their air tanker crashed while fighting a wildfire on June 3, 2012.

Firefighter Anne Veseth, age 20, of the USDA Forest Service, Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest died after being struck by a tree while fighting a wildfire on August 12, 2012.

Their names will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the National Fire Academy grounds. The national tribute is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the Department of Homeland Security.

More than 5,000 people, including members of Congress, Administration officials and other dignitaries, members of the fire service, and families and friends of the fallen firefighters are expected to attend. Families will receive flags flown over the U. S. Capitol and the National Memorial. Members of the fire service, honor guard units, and pipe and drum units from across the U.S. will participate in this national tribute.

The official national service will be held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland on Sunday, October 6.
