City of Boise looking for volunteers to help with underpriveleged kids' shopping trip

The City of Boise is looking for volunteers needed to assist more than 150 kids expected to attend an annual holiday shopping trip coordinated by Boise Parks & Recreation.

Kids selected for the event attend free after-school programs operated by Boise Parks & Recreation at low-income schools and other locations. Many of the children are refugees.

The children are transported to a local Target store where they receive a $30 gift card to buy gifts, clothes and toiletries. Volunteers accompany the kids in the store and help with the check-out process.

“For many of these children, this will be their only Christmas,” said Doug Holloway, director of Boise Parks & Recreation. “The gift cards enable the kids to buy personal items and holiday gifts for family and friends.”

The Dept. of Parks and Rec is looking for "dozens" of volunteers. Donations are also needed to help fund the shopping trip. To make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer for the event, please contact the City Recreation Office, 110 Scout Lane, (208) 608-7650 or Fort Boise Community Center, 700 Robbins Road, (208) 608-7650. Or send an email to kbledsoe@cityofboise.org.
