UPDATE: Lightning starts 11 new fires in the Boise National Forest; evacuation order for the South Fork Road lifted

By C. J. Gish. CREATED Jul 23, 2014

There have been 11 new fires reported as of this morning by Boise National Forest Fire Lookouts. All are small, less than ½ acre in size and firefighting resources are being dispatched to the new blazes. Additional fire reports are anticipated due to the widespread lightning across the forest last night. None are threatening structures at this time.

Whiskey Complex Update: The evacuation order for the South Fork Road homes is rescinded, effective immediately. (About 60 homes involved with this)

The Closure on the South Fork Payette River Road will remain, with access limited to residents and firefighters only.

The Evacuation order (Level 2) on the Pioneerville area homes and related road closures (Grimes Pass Road is closed at Pioneerville) remain in effect.

(2 fires, 9640 acres, 60% contained, 1008 personnel, 30 crews, 37 engines, 3 helicopters, Estimated Full Containment July 28th) – Rain was spotty over the fire area last night. Even with higher humidity and light rain the vegetation remains abnormally dry and subject to ignition. Weather today will be hot and dry.

Wash Fire – Crews, aided by helicopter retardant drops, were successful in tying in the fire line on the southeast corner of the Wash Fire. This is the area of the fire that was a threat to Pioneerville. Fire activity was minimal overnight. Firefighters have a solid containment line on the northwest and west flanks, and yesterday evening firefighters completed a 100-acre burnout to complete the line along the South Fork Road.

On the east flank, firefighters are evaluating an approximate 700-acre burnout of fuel between the main fire and the indirect containment line. Implementation depends on weather conditions. The purpose is to eliminate fuel that could ignite at a later date if not reduced now between the wildfire and the fire line.

Grimes Fire – There is a good solid containment line around the fire and today crews will be patrolling and finishing mopping-up. They will extinguish all smoldering and burning vegetation within 300 feet of the fire line and eliminate any threats further in.

Closures and Evacuations - Hot Springs Campground is open beginning today. Pioneerville and the SF Payette River Road homes remain under a Level 2 Voluntary Evacuation. Grimes Pass Road is closed north of Pioneerville, along with the South Fork Payette River road. An area closure around the Whiskey Complex extends to points near Placerville, Centerville and Pioneerville. The Banks to Lowman Road, Highway 17, is open. The South Fork Payette River is open to rafting.
