White Castle's little square slider is so beloved by millions of people that it has been featured in movies such as "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" and "My Porcelain Past", and the Beastie Boys mention White Castle in no less than five songs.
Now there is further proof that White Castle's original slider has earned its devotion and place in history. It was recently named the most influential burger of all time by Time magazine.
According to Time, White Castle was the first burger to "spawn a fast-food empire" and its succcess "paved the way for the great American burger obsession."
Seventeen burgers are on the list, with McDonald's' burger coming in at No. 2. Burger King is ranked as the fifth most influential burger.
Not all the burgers selected are from fast-food giants though. The ShackBurger, which originated in New York City, is No. 7. It features prime cuts of whole muscle and a secret, tangy sauce. Time says that it was the first burger to start a food craze in 2004, and people would often wait hours in line for the tasty burger.
Another burger on the list is the Garden Burger, the original veggie burger. It was originally served at an Oregon vegetarian restaurant but it is now only available as a frozen-food item.
The In-N-Out Burger came in at No. 3. Like the White Castle slider, it is a hamburger that inspires devotion. Since the company only has 294 locations, fans of the burger, who are not able to get one in their hometowns, will often make a special trip just for an In-N-Out burger when visiting a city lucky enough to have a store.
The first White Castle was opened by Billy Ingram in 1931 in Wichita, Kan. More than 1.4 million sliders are now served on a daily basis.
